Austrian Airlines’ newest fleet member has officially commenced scheduled service. The Boeing 787-9 aircraft departed Vienna International Airport at 11 am today, bound for Montreal (YUL) in Canada. The aircraft, registered as OE-LPG, has thus made its maiden flight for the Austrian hub carrier and will continue to operate on this route over the coming weeks. Austrian Airlines COO Stefan-Kenan Scheib: “We are delighted that the renewal of our long-haul fleet is continuing. Two more Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners will join the Austrian fleet later this year.”
Austrian has taken over the aircraft from Lufthansa. The Dreamliner was transferred from Germany to Taipei in April, where Lufthansa’s aircraft acceptance, Austrian registration and certification, as well as all modifications and work on the cabin, were carried out. The aircraft was then given its Austrian livery in Teruel, Spain. Once all work had been completed, the aircraft, bearing the registration OE-LPG, finally landed at Vienna Airport on the afternoon of Whit Sunday and was received by Austrian.
Fleet modernization is progressing
The rollover of Austrian’s long-haul fleet began as early as 2024. Since then, two Dreamliners – with the registration marks OE-LPM and OE-LPL – have been flying for Austrian Airlines. By the end of the 2028/2029 winter schedule, the Austrian long-haul fleet will consist exclusively of 787-9 Dreamliners and comprise 12 aircraft. The six Boeing 777s and three Boeing 767s still in the Austrian long-haul fleet will be phased out gradually – the latter still in the course of this year.
Alongside the modernization of the long-haul fleet, a fleet renewal is also underway for Austrian’s short- and medium-haul fleet. Here, Austrian Airlines’ Airbus fleet is set to grow by six brand-new Airbus A320neo aircraft, bringing the total to 46 Airbus aircraft. Two of these aircraft are expected to arrive as early as summer 2026.
The 17 Embraer aircraft are being phased out. Three have already left the Austrian fleet, and Austrian is expected to retire the next Embraer aircraft in July 2026.
A major fleet renewal is underway not only on Austrian Airlines’ long-haul routes, but also across its short- and medium-haul fleet: here, Austrian Airlines is replacing 17 Embraer aircraft with six additional, brand-new Airbus A320neo aircraft, each with 180 seats. The first of these six aircraft is expected in summer 2026. With the addition of these six aircraft, the Austrian national carrier’s Airbus fleet will grow to 46 aircraft. As things stand, the phasing out of the Embraer 195 will be completed by the end of 2028. The next Embraer aircraft is expected to leave Austrian in May 2026.
In short, Austrian Airlines is modernizing and harmonizing its entire fleet. The five fleets – Embraer, Airbus, Boeing 767, Boeing 777 and Boeing 787-9 – will in future be consolidated into two state-of-the-art fleets: the Airbus A320 family and the Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners.
