- Start of a long-term partnership between the red-white-red airline and the renowned Museum of Applied Arts
- New amenity kits in a total of three designs and six versions
- CEO Annette Mann: “We are delighted to be working with the MAK, one of the most important museums of its kind in the world. Using the textile designs provided by the MAK, the Austrian Design Team created six versions of the new amenity kits, which will make traveling even more pleasant and, above all, more artistic for our Business Class passengers.”
Business Class passengers aboard Austrian Airlines long-haul flights have something to look forward to: thanks to a new partnership between Austrian Airlines and the MAK – Museum of Applied Arts, new amenity kits will be available on long-haul flights operated by the airline with the red-white-red tail fin starting in October. From now on, the focus above the clouds will not only be on the well-being of Austrian Airlines’ business class passengers, but also on the visible connection to important artists in Austrian history. Specifically, the MAK has provided three textile designs from the archives of the Wiener Werkstätte, the world-famous production community of visual artists founded in 1903. These textile designs were used by the Austrian Design Team for the design of the amenity kits. The three textile designs were created by three of the most important artists of the Wiener Werkstätte:
- Koloman Moser: This universal artist is considered one of the pioneers of Viennese Modernism and lived from 1868 to 1918. He mastered the disciplines of painting, graphic art, arts and crafts, interior design, fashion, and stage design (see photos 1 and 2 for textile design).
- Dagobert Peche: The artist, who lived from 1887 to 1923, was only active as a designer for around ten years, yet he created an impressive body of work. He became a master of playing with forms and transformation and was distinguished by his artistic diversity and exciting contrasts (see photos 3 and 4 for textile design).
- Mathilde Flögl: The craftswoman and graphic designer, who lived from 1893 to 1958, worked for the Wiener Werkstätte in almost all areas of arts and crafts. She shaped the art landscape above all with her fantastic and expressive ceramics, glass decorations, toys, jewelry, fashion, and fabric and wallpaper patterns (see photos 5 and 6 for textile design).
“We are delighted to be working with the MAK, one of the most important museums of its kind in the world. Using the textile designs provided by the MAK, the Austrian Design Team created six versions of the new amenity kits, which will make traveling even more pleasant and, above all, more artistic for our Business Class passengers,” says Austrian Airlines CEO Annette Mann, emphasizing the importance of the collaboration for the traditional Austrian airline.
Founded in 1863, the MAK is housed in one of the most magnificent buildings on Vienna’s Ringstraße and is one of the three most important museums of applied arts in the world. The MAK’s collection comprises over 900,000 objects and printed works from five centuries.
Lilli Hollein, Director General and Scientific Director of the MAK: “The Wiener Werkstätte, whose archive is preserved at the MAK, marks a golden age of applied arts in Austria and a new aesthetic that continues to influence design today. At the Museum of Applied Arts, we are showing a cross-section of this world-famous era and of the WW that only the MAK collection can offer.”
Useful content packaged in an artistic design
The new amenity kits for Business Class passengers on Austrian Airlines long-haul flights include a sleep mask designed to match the amenity kits, a toothbrush, toothpaste tablets, earplugs and socks. The items are packaged in paper packaging produced by Skysupply. A banderole around the amenity kit provides passengers with background information about the MAK and the respective artist whose designs were used to create the amenity kit.
Particularly appealing – and not just for collectors – is the fact that each design is available in two color variations. This means that passengers can discover the same artist in a different color scheme on both their outbound and return flights. As things stand at present, the amenity kits will be available on Austrian long-haul flights for a total of two years, with each design being used for eight months at a time.
Long-term cooperation The collaboration on the redesign of the Business Class amenity kits marks the start of a longer-term cooperation between Austrian Airlines and the MAK. Intensive work is currently underway on the redesign of the amenity kits for Premium Economy Class, which are also set to take off on board the red-white-red long-haul aircraft in just a few months.
