Financial results for the first quarter of the year in detail:
- First quarter of 2025: Adjusted EBIT at EUR -111 million
- 2.5 million passengers travelled with Austrian Airlines
- Preparing for the intense summer months
- CEO Annette Mann: “In the first quarter, we were able to significantly improve customer satisfaction and punctuality compared to the previous year. Nevertheless, the traditionally weak first quarter was negative, as expected. All our efforts are now focussed on the upcoming summer. In any case, the desire to travel remains unbroken. We are well prepared for the upcoming months of strong travel.”
As expected, the first quarter of this year was negative for Austrian Airlines with an Adjusted EBIT of -111 million euros. Nonetheless, people are drawn to travelling, as an outlook for the upcoming months shows. The current geopolitical situation in the airline’s key core markets is a factor of uncertainty for the coming months, but Austrian Airlines remains committed to significantly exceeding the previous year’s result.

The results for the first quarter in detail
At EUR 458 million, Austrian Airlines’ revenue increased by 14 per cent this year compared to the first quarter of 2024 (Q1 2024: EUR 403 million). At EUR -111 million, Adjusted EBIT was also 9 per cent higher than in the same period of the previous year (Q1 2024: EUR -122 million), which was negatively impacted by strike costs. Total expenses rose by 9 per cent to EUR 588 million in Q1 2025 (Q1 2024: EUR 538 million). Total revenue increased by 15 per cent to EUR 477 million (Q1 2024: EUR 415 million). The number of employees remained almost constant at just over 6,200.
Attractive cooperations
The first quarter of 2025 was characterized by a targeted marketing presence at Austrian Airlines. Under the already familiar ‘Highlights of Vienna’ naming concept for the new long-haul fleet at Austrian Airlines, the long-haul aircraft Boeing 787-9 with the registration OE-LPL was given the name ‘Spanish Riding School’, with which the ‘Dreamliner’ now flies a piece of important Austrian tradition around the world. Through this marketing cooperation with the Spanish Riding School, Austrian Airlines has also recently become the sponsor of a 12-year-old Lipizzaner stallion named Favory Wera.
Austrian Airlines has also had two special liveries produced. An Airbus A320 now bears the official logo of Austria’s participation in the Expo 2025 world exhibition, while a Boeing 777-200 long-haul aircraft is adorned with a modern interpretation of the famous musician’s silhouette to mark the 200th anniversary of the birth of the famous Austrian composer Johann Strauss. “In the first few months of 2025, we were able to set a number of successful accents that emphasize Austrian Airlines’ unmistakable connection with Austria as a location and its special history”, emphasizes CEO Annette Mann.
Four Boeing 777-200s equipped with Sharkskin technology
There is further good news from Austrian Airlines’ flight operations. The so-called Sharkskin film was installed on four Austrian Airlines long-haul aircraft, specifically four Boeing 777-200s, during the first quarter of 2025. This film significantly reduces frictional resistance, resulting in a reduction in CO2 emissions and fuel consumption for the Austrian Airlines long-haul fleet.
After 350 days, the Airbus A320neo, which was severely damaged last year in an unintentional aircraft movement without passengers, was also able to take off with passengers again at the end of March 2025. “This was made possible by the outstanding repair work carried out by the manufacturer Airbus together with our colleagues at Austrian Technik”, emphasizes Austrian Airlines COO Francesco Sciortino. The opening of the new long-haul simulator by Lufthansa Aviation Training at the Vienna site also represents a milestone for Austrian Airlines, as the training of long-haul pilots can be organized and carried out with significantly more flexibility and less complexity in future.
Austrian Airlines is convinced to be well prepared for the upcoming summer, which will be a busy one for travellers. “Our goal is clear: we want to be one of the most punctual airlines in Europe again this year”, says Sciortino. With Edinburgh in Scotland, the German holiday island of Sylt, the Norwegian Lofoten Islands and the Bulgarian city of Burgas, the airline has four new, exciting destinations in store for its passengers in the 2025 summer flight schedule.
In order to be able to offer passengers the best possible and fastest possible service in the upcoming intensive months, the already established Austrian Travel Assistants will once again be on duty during the summer months and actively support the existing Austrian Airlines team. Austrian Travel Assistants will be on duty at Vienna Airport during the busiest travel months of the year to provide Austrian Airlines guests with the best possible service and support, for example at check-in, in the transit area and during boarding, as well as accompanying children travelling alone and helping to locate suitcases.
The “dress rehearsal” for the summer was a success: Austrian Airlines was able to offer its passengers a high level of reliability with a punctuality rate of 87 per cent and 99.8 per cent of flights operated during the equally busy Easter week.
