Austrian Airlines tests energy of the future for more sustainable aircraft maintenance operations

  • Pilot operation for hydrogen power generator on the Vienna Airport apron
  • First use of the innovative “H2Genset” from Test-Fuchs for emission-free power supply to carry out aircraft maintenance work
  • Hydrogen as the energy of the future for many areas of airport operations

In order to reduce CO2 emissions, Austrian Airlines is focusing on innovative and continuous optimization of its operations. In addition to measures in the air, the practical suitability of hydrogen as an energy supplier for carrying out necessary aircraft maintenance work on the Vienna Airport apron is now being tested.

Following a development process lasting several months, the so-called “H2Genset”, an innovative hydrogen generator from TEST-FUCHS, is used for the first time in a trial operation at Vienna Airport. The emission-free power supply of an Austrian Airlines Airbus A320 is being tested using a highly efficient frequency converter from Dynell. The project partners want to use this pilot to build up expertise and familiarize themselves with the necessary infrastructure. The project is intended to set the course for the possible future use of hydrogen for mobile energy supply at the airport and thus take an important step towards reducing the CO2 footprint.

Austrian Airlines is continuously implementing projects and measures to reduce its environmental impact and use the resources it requires as efficiently as possible. As part of Lufthansa Group, Austrian Airlines focuses in particular on accelerated fleet modernization, the continuous optimization of flight operations, the use and further development of sustainable aviation fuels and offers for private travelers and corporate customers to make air travel more sustainable. The Lufthansa Group aims to achieve a neutral CO₂ balance by 2050 through the use of reduction and compensation measures. By 2030, the Lufthansa Group aims to halve its net CO₂ emissions compared to 2019 through reduction and compensation measures.
