Traffic Result of the Austrian Airlines Group for May: Considerable growth in passenger volume by new market strategy

• Austrian Airlines transports 16.1 percent more passengers in May 2010 than in same month last year
• Particularly strong passenger growth on European routes: plus 22.8 percent

The Austrian Airlines Group carried 1.015 million passengers in May 2010. This means Austrian Airlines carried a total of 16.1 percent more passengers in May 2010 than in May 2009. The flight load factor rose by 4.3 percentage points to 74.8 percent. We reduced capacity measured in Available Seat Kilometers (ASK) by 3.9 percent. Demand measured in Revenue Passenger Kilometers (RPK) rose by 10.3 percent.

The members of the Austrian Airlines Executive Board, Andreas Bierwirth and Peter Malanik, said the following: “The strong passenger growth shows that our new, active market strategy, Austrian Next Generation, is taking effect. Passengers are coming back to Austrian.”

In the period from January to May 2010, the number of passengers carried, at around 3.9 million, was 6.9 percent above the previous year’s figure. Without the restrictions imposed due to the cloud of volcanic ash, the level of growth in the first five months of the year would have been in double figures. The load factor rose by 3.2 percentage points to 73.2 percent. We reduced our ASK by 2 percent. RPK rose by 2.4 percent.

Europe
In May, around 815,100 passengers flew with Austrian Airlines within Europe. Compared to the same month last year, this means 22.8 percent more passengers flew with us. The load factor rose by 2.9 percentage points to 72.2 percent. The figure for ASK rose by 16.5 percent. RPK rose by 21.4 percent.

In the period from January to May 2010, we carried around 3.1 million passengers in Europe. This means we are 11 percent up on the previous year. The load factor rose by 1.2 percentage points to 65.6 percent. The figure for ASK rose by 7.8 percent, and that for RPK by 9.8 percent.

Intercontinental
The number of passengers carried in the Intercontinental segment rose by 11.1 percent to 145,900 in May. We reduced our ASK by 1.2 percent, and increased the load factor by 7.4 percentage points to 78 percent. RPK rose by 9.1 percent.

In the period from January to May 2010, we carried 636,000 passengers, the equivalent of an increase of 3.8 percent on the same period last year. The load factor improved by 6.9 percentage points to 80.1 percent. We reduced our ASK by 5.4 percent. RPK rose by 3.5 percent.

Charter
With the new market strategy of Austrian Airlines we are using more of our available capacity for Scheduled business. This is leading to a reduction in Charter business in 2010.
We carried 53,800 passengers in the Charter segment in May, 32.2 percent fewer than in the comparison month last year. The load factor fell by 6.4 percentage points to 67.9 percent. We reduced our ASK by 25.7 percent. The figure for RPK fell by 32.1 percent.

In the period from January to May 2010, we carried 195,500 passengers in the Charter segment. This figure is 28.5 percent lower than last year. The load factor fell by 3.7 percentage points to 73.8 percent. We reduced our ASK by 27.5 percent. The figure for RPK fell by 30.9 percent.

Austrian Airlines
Austrian Airlines is Austria’s largest carrier and offers a global route network of round 130 destinations. In Central and Eastern Europe, the route network is particularly dense: With 42 destinations Austrian Airlines is the market leader throughout the region. Thanks to its favourable geographical location at the heart of Europe, the company’s hub at Vienna International Airport is the ideal gateway between East and West. Austrian Airlines is part of the Lufthansa Group, Europe’s largest airline group, and a member of the Star Alliance, the first global alliance of international airlines.
