Environmental protection measures
Environmental protection at Austrian Airlines is not just about cutting down on emissions and noise. We also strive to provide the best possible environmental protection in our ground procedures.
Participation in the EcoBusinessPlan Vienna
Austrian Airlines is participating in the ÖkoBusinessPlan environmental initiative of the City of Vienna since 2005. Within the framework of this initiative, Austrian Airlines was once again awarded as an eco-profit company in 2009. These activities let the company unite ecological measures with commercial benefits.
Saving energy
Electrical and heat energy are used in a wide range of different fields of an airline and are therefore carrying a great potential for savings. Austrian Airlines are saving energy by the installation of dimming switches and energy saving lamps. In Hangar I and II and in the corridors we have installed energy saving systems for our hangar lighting. They have considerably reduced our electric power consumption.
Introduction of Natural Gas Cars
In winter 2009/2010 Austrian Airlines has started the introduction of natural gas vehicles into its vehicle fleet. By this we can reduce our emissions on ground as well. At the moment 16 natural gas cars are in use, most of them in the Austrian Technikal Department.
Preventing waste
Austrian Airlines has developed a waste management concept for the Austrian Base at Schwechat. Based on the concept, the company has succeeded in clearly reducing its residual waste. We did also reduce our hazardous waste strongly within the last years. Within the framework of a research project we are developing a new onboard waste management system. This system helps us to reduce onboard residual waste, the amount of waste and weight on board.
